I am an elementary school teacher and just discovered, well almost have discovered the phenomena of "blog". Ok, I am trying to anyway. I am old by your standards, but have always felt that my age is not indicative of my thinking. I work with younger adults and always have, and the thing is I think it makes me feel younger because of that. It's nothing that I have tried to do or be, it just is. I am very glad to see that young Christians are taking a stand and speaking up and out. The world is in real trouble I think. Our community, as well as those that surround us, is absolutely immersed in drug addiction. Prescription drug abuse has came in and taken us hostage. There seems to be no end in sight. Everywhere you look you see the signs of children living in homes where the most important acquisition is the next dose of drugs. And yet we want them to come to school and function "like normal children". What would that be for them. I am really sad about this. Childhood is taken by so many things that cannot be controlled, but this thing is controllable. If you have any insight please share it with me. Peace be with you and yours.

You are essentially describing the traditional Nature vs Nurture problem. For years, researchers and scientists did not know which was a stronger influence in the development of an individual. More recent research has concluded that Nurture wins out. (The split that I heard was something like 90% Nurture and 10% Nature.)

Now, that said, you are also speaking about human choice in the equation. And I believe you are right. It is our choices that ultimately define us and our futures. How we make those decisions is influenced by our genetics (Nature) and our upbringing (Nurture), but ultimately we can rebel against both and go our own way.
